Disney Delivers Magic to the Kitchen
We all feel it, 2020 has not had a whole lot to get excited about. We do our best to stay positive here at 23&Main but we also know it’s a struggle for many. One of the things that has been a positive for us Disney fans though is how the company continues to find new ways to connect with their fans. Since spring, Disney has been releasing the recipes from some of the most iconic Disney creations. They’ve even released the famed “Kitchen Sink” recipe, although I’ll admit I didn’t think you needed a recipe for that…just throw all the ice cream you have in a huge bowl and top with everything you have!
A Perfect Distraction
Joking aside, the recipes have been a great distraction for us. They’ve helped us remember some great times we’ve had at the parks and resorts while adding variety to the normal rotation of tired out recipes in our house. As I thought more about this simple act from Disney I realized this kind of thing is what makes the company so magical. Not only was it a way for the company to stay connected with its fans, even as the parks were/are closed, it was also a way to deliver hope and happiness to millions of homes. Food often brings people together, and this is no different. The cherry on top is that many of the recipes they are releasing also come with strong emotional memories. Heck, I still remember my first Dole Whip. Here at 23&Main we have been very grateful that Disney has offered us a peak into the food magic, so we decided to share something of our own too.
An Idea Born from Necessity
As new recipes came out I often found myself hunting down the official post where I could find it. I’d print it off, lose it somehow and have to hunt all over again. I eventually made a binder of each recipe as it came out. I ended up with a hodgepodge cookbook that had zero rhyme or reason to it.
FREE – Guide to Disney Parks & Resort Recipes
To clean up my Disney inspired cookbook I created an ebook with all the recipes organized so I could easily find them. The ebook also allows me to quickly add new recipes as they are released. Starting today, 23&Main will be sharing that ebook to anyone who wants a copy for FREE. You can get your copy right here if you’d like.
All the recipes released so far are good, after all they are all Disney approved. There are a few standouts in our mind though so I figured we’d mention them here.
Our Favorites, So Far…
First for us are the Mickey Mouse Beignets (Page 3). I don’t know why I always thought there was more to these than there is, but they are not that hard to make. While they are a bit messy, a beginner could easily master these. There is nothing simple about the taste though! They are a great Sunday brunch addition and worthy of our number one spot.
Second is the Dole Whip (Page 18). We could never quite master the consistency each time but the flavor is unmistakable. Having one of these brings me right back into Adventureland and getting one before my epic Jungle Cruise journey. The blend of the sweet pineapple and creamy vanilla is a perfect match. These are good, but they made me crave the real thing too.
Third is the Grilled Three-Cheese sandwich from Woody’s Lunch Box (Page 11). To be honest, this was challenging to make. There is a lot going on in this simple yet complex little sandwich. It was all worth it though! The combination of cheeses is prefect and the crunch on the bread made for a perfect match. This was by far the best grilled cheese I’ve ever made…and trust me I’ve made a lot. I haven’t had the park version, so now I have a situation where I can pit Disney chef’s against my abilities. I’m pretty sure what the outcome will be, but I can give them a run for their money.
We have to give a honorable mention to Churros (Page 19). I literally can’t have a proper Disney vacation without at least one Churro. They’re great, portable and just the right portion size to share a bit but still get full. We made our version and they turned out pretty great too, but without the same equipment these are a bit hard to re-create. They were sweet, crunchy and delicious but like the Dole Whip, they made me miss the real ones even more.
